At 82 years old, Jan Bliss, resident at Azura Memory Care of Eau Claire, only dreamed of hitting the water for an afternoon on the sailboat again. Azura’s MOSAIC Dreams Program, which aims to fulfill dreams of their residents, loved the idea of getting Jan back on a boat and thanks to the Lake Wissota Yacht Club, Jan did just that!
Jan attended the Merchant Marine Academy and fell in love with being on the water. At Merchant Marine Academy, he became a First Engineer and sailed the world on huge ships. After ‘retiring’ from the Merchant Marines, Jan received his MBA in Finance from UC Berkley, was hired by Levi Strauss in San Francisco and spent 3 years in Japan. After his final retirement in 1999, Jan bought a home and sailed regularly on his handmade wooden FolkBoat and an Islander 36 in the San Francisco Bay.
Azura connected with Jack Rosker, Director at the Lake Wissota Yacht Club. He loved Jan’s story and generously agreed to take Jan out on the boat for a final sailing adventure. On Monday, September 11th at 1 PM at the Lake Wissota Yacht Club, Jan rode the waves and soaked up the sunshine on his sailboat excursion.
